Web Design Vs. Web Development: Not the same.

Design and Development

The terms web design and web development are sometimes thought of as interchangeable. Allthough, the two have very different meanings. Let’s look at the differences. Know what your looking for so you know who to hire.

Web design is the front-end part of the website that you see on the screen. Web design is focused primarily on how a site looks, the visual represenstantion and how visitors who come to the site interact with it. Good web designers create websites that look great based on basic design principles blended with branding the look and feel of the business, person, or general industry the website is about. Visuals are only part of the design. Understanding usability and location of links, text and graphics is also neccessary to create a pleasent experince for your visitors or they may not return. Visitors and customers that are able to simply navigate around and find the information and products they came looking for don’t think twice about the great design the web designer created for them.

Web development is the back-end of the website, the code and programming, the nuts and bolts that powers the pages and allows for interaction with the website. Simple put a web developer focuses primarily on how a site works and functions. Experienced web developers know how to program or re-program scripts, work with various languages like HTML, CSS PHP, Javascript, etc. Further more they build and work with web forms, image galleries & slideshows, review systems, maps and much more to keep a site running effectively for the purpose it was created.

Please don’t blur the two, because you may think you talking to a designer when you may be talking to a developer and get unexpected results or become fustrated. Then again, most designers in today’s world will know some code and respect the development process. In turn most developers will understand the value of good design and create a website that functions around a particular design.
Finding a graphic-web developer, one who is both versed and experinced in creating a good design (front-end) and developing a website(back-end) around the same design he/she created is a rare and valuable find. Think of all the pieces to that go into a website that do NOT need to be communicated between two different people! That you need to communicate to only one person who understands the scope of a project from beginning to end. The time, savings, possible missed communication and collaborations are just not there to happen. If it does, that is soley between the client and the graphic-web developer. Ultimately it is one less person to have to explain anything to.

Wyden, Lofgren Statements On The Insufficient Responses Received From Agency On Internet Seizures

90+ Law Professors Sign Letter Asking Congress To Reject The PROTECT-IP Act

Google Boss Eric Schmidt :: We’ll Fight Anti-Piracy Blocking Laws

ORIGINAL: We’re forcing them to take our concerns seriously: Demand Progress members have sent more than 50,000 emails to Senators to urge them to oppose the Internet Blacklist Bill (the PROTECT IP Act).  Now we’re hearing back from them, and one thing is clear: Our emails are compelling Senators to start thinking hard about Internet freedom.  Will you urge your lawmakers to oppose the Internet Blacklist Bill?  Just fill out the simple form HERE.

PROTECT IP would give the government the power to force Internet service providers, search engines, and other “information location tools” to block users’ access to sites that have been accused of copyright infringement — the initiation of a China-style censorship regime here in the United States.

Senators are writing back to let us know that our emails are making them think twice before rubber-stamping PROTECT IP.  For instance, Oregon’s Jeff Merkley is telling Demand Progress members:

I have heard from many Oregonians on both sides of this issue – those who support providing U.S. agencies with greater authority to shut down websites, and those who are worried that the legislation could result in Internet censorship. Thanks to your letter and the letters of fellow Oregonians, I have asked my staff to take a closer look into this legislation.

Will you email Congress to urge them to oppose the PROTECT IP Act? Just add your info at right to automatically send this note to them, under your name and from your address.  (You can edit the letter if you’d like to.)

Just sign on at right and we’ll send an email to your lawmakers.

This bill has powerful sponsors and is moving fast — will you urge your friends to sign on too? Demand Progress

Disc Golf : Selling a complete line of discs, clothing & accessories

Have you heard of the sport of Disc Golf? This recent website development is geared to that market. Pure Disc Golf is a business created by, run by, and sport played by Andrew Rich. In his own words, "I always dreamed of running my own pro-shop, helping new players develop their skills, and fostering growth in the sport. "

Andrew came to me with his old website, that was using some sort of yahoo store template, that was in need of a whole new design and shopping cart system. Andrew has inventory stocked and ready to sell; Golf Discs, Branded Clothing, and disc golf accessories. I offered a shopping cart solution installed and set up ready for him to start selling, it even has live USPS shipping pricing. The cart is easily manageable by himself to add products and categories, create specials and coupons, create invoices, track sales via report,, add product images, cross sell related products, allow customers to give product reviews and personal accounts and more. Andrew can handle everything from a backend administration panel.

Along with his Disc Golf Shopping Cart Website he needed business cards and a nice twitter background to complete the branding package to restart his business with an online component. All work and designs were complete and delivered within 30 days.

Jason Burke : OR Acupuncture

It has been a busy week juggling several projects. This post is about OR Acupuncture. I have been working with Jason Burke developing his website and online presence. Jason is an acupuncturists and Chinese Herbalist with over 7 years of professional experience who recently moved to Eugene. He trusted me with his whole design project from start to finish. He showed me a few examples of what he liked and did not like in websites that related to his field of expertise.
Armed with that information and a few images and his Logo I set to work. Setting up his hosting, email, email forwarding along with a  custom landing page in the first 24 hours of his request to use me and my services. Within a week a design was fully in place, most of his base content was added, and then we worked on adding a few more images, tweaking the site a little, and doing a final “once over” for a status of completed project. We Went live Wednesday May 27, 2009.
I have suggested to Jason adding a blog in the future to allow him more control over his website and adding content without having to be so reliant on me. I love the work, but love knowing the people and relationships I build can be empowered with more control over their websites and overall online presence. Getting paid is great, knowing I’m helping people enter the online world is personal satisfaction that money can’t buy.

Congrats on being live on the web and the opportunity to work with you. I’m  looking forward to coming in for some Safe, Effective, and Drug-free Acupuncture Treatments in the next few weeks.
