developed their wonderful
working Quarter Horse strain using the stud Ole Sorrel as their
foundation rock. Mental factors such as cow sense, determination,
calmness, intelligence, etc., were sought in these horses. He states
that this system can be used to improve any species of working animal,
including working dogs.
“Locate an outstanding prepotent stud
and breed to several excellent females. Obtain an outstanding
male from these crosses and breed back to half sisters, same sire,
different dam). Outcross foundation stud on excellent females
and cross tested (working ability) daughters back into program
on foundation blood. To firmly establish desirable characteristics,
mate uncles to nieces rather than fathers to daughters.”
“Breed for:
1.Type
2.General conformation
3.Superior performance
a.Action: Freedom of movement that makes tasks easy to accomplish.
b.Temperament: Ability to learn and desire to execute,
c.Endurance: Ability to work when tired and give extra effort
when called upon.”
“Each potential sire and dam is tested
in the field and is not used unless he or she quickly gains proficiency
required of breeding stock.”
“Eventually only stock tracing back to
the original foundation stud are included in the core program.
The original foundation stud should be the pattern to strive for
in get from this program. The old stud’s blood should continue
to dominate. This is a method which is also referred to as Backcrossing
or Backmassing.”
Further on in this section he explains what he calls the U.S.E.
formula:
“Regardless of the type of program you
adopt … you should follow a three step formula to develop
offspring from your program. You have to use your potential brood
stock, then you must select your actual brood stock and, of course,
experiment by breeding the mates you have selected. Remember that
the appearance of prepotency is distorted by: (1) better females
can make one sire appear more prepotent than another of equal
breeding caliber. (2) Promotion of outstanding offspring and hiding
of average or inferior offspring corrupts the truth. (3) The training
and care of a sire’s get influences the appearance of prepotency.”
