The Process of Web Development

There are many things to consider when you have decided to launch a website for your business, band, social group, personal use, etc. The process is broken down in a series of steps that keeps you informed during the various stages of development. Here, in general, is how the process will work:

Initial contact with the focus and goal of what your site should achieve
A discussion, coupled with a consultation about the layout, design and navigation of your site is conducted
Images, copy, layout sketches, and other material are gathered and/or produced. If you have a previous design or a other file (PDF, ESP, PSD etc.) that can serve as the design template
The layout of the site is produced and a visual mockup is sent for your approval
Then the framework and layout of the site is produced and programmed and sent for your approval, to move forward
Next, the additional pages are created using the material and copy provided and previously discussed
The page are then linked together into a site and sent for feedback. Change are made as needed
The final stages of live testing and debugging any scripts, forms, links, etc. is performed
Final approval is give and project is filed as complete

Question that need considering

Any developer should be concerned with and be asking the following before development is started. This information is gathered during stage 2 (from the list to your left).

What and how many pages are needed?
How will they link together?
How will the navigation be structured? (Consider this carefully)
Where do you want the visitor to go?
What needs focus? Is there a target page to funnel them too?
What message is desired for communication?
What’s the optimum site architecture for SEO, sales funnels and effective calls-to-action?
How much space does each content block need?
How does the content flow?
How do the graphical elements support the message, brand, sales copy and tone of voice?
Is the design unified or at odds with the content?
Does everything come together to create the best user experience and sales environment?
NOTE: Remember that you, the client, are an integral part of the whole process. How quickly you can gather your information and files, will play a part in determining the speed at which your project progresses. Once the process is started, giving prompt, clear and constructive feedback is crucial.
