Word Press Finally Upgraded

I have been putting off my WP upgrade for the last 2 updates. But with the release of Google Gears I went through the scary, yet necessary removal of the old and updated to the new.

I feel so cool. But what I did was nothing more than follow what everyone has access to. The Instructions!

I used Dreamweaver, but any FTP program should do just fine.

Now I have access to some new cool plugins and the backend user interface is very clean, and using the drop down admin menu is sweet Thank you ozh (get it here)

Now to find out more about the G Gears…..Happy upgrading

Getting updates about Mars

Mars Phoenix on TwitterGetting updates from a machince on MARS.  I can watch and read and follow on Twitter. I find this a great use for this tool (Twitter)

There are over 18,000 people following the Mars Updates.

I am and have found it all very captivating. More about Mars and twitter More on Mars Phoenix

I recall watching a special on OPB (oregon’s modified PBS channel) about sending a drone to one of the moons of Saturn. They said getting that kind thing to happen is like throwing a basket ball from NASA in Florida to anywhere in Europe and hitting nothing but net! And it a pricey game to play, with large risks. I’m happy just getting the updates from twitter. Nice and simple.

True File Compression Software For Free

Just zip itI think we all use some for of compression software in our daily Internet and office lives. Well maybe not all people, but st some point you encounter the question, ” How do I make this file smaller?” The compression software that is built into Windows XP isn’t really all that great at compression files, but it bundles them up for you nicely so they attach easily in emails and for storing on disk. I was using Fipzip for a long time just to bundle files to deliver to clients and friends, but that program while serving me well over the years just plains sucks for compression. I only spent 5 mins looking around the web for a replacement to flipzip and found Just-ZipIT. Downloaded and installed and performed a zip on a .psd file that started as a 182MB. Filpzip only crunched it down to 180MB and that just will not do. But Just-ZipIT drop it down to just a tad over 25MB.

softpediaNow that is compression, Woot!

WooHoo! Tabs for Windows Explorer

Today I was reading an article in MaximumPC that told of the wonders of TAB BROWSING FOLDERS on a PC. I was in shock….once the initial concept seeded itself in my overly-exited-techie-brain I scanned the article and saw that it was listed under a Vista Headline and my hope sank. But I went to the website they suggested in there Tiny URL Fashion anyway.

Once I was there I read over the specs and found that Windows XP is also supported. Tabbed Folders Windows ExplorerSweet! I like the way Vista “looks” but I really need the performance and reliability of XP.

OK, I see that I need to do some “upgrading” to windows before I can use the super-cool functions of Tabs right there in my folders.

I see I need install .NET Framework 2.0

So I head over to Microsoft and download it. At the end of the download and install (2-3 mins. over a cable connection) I get a warning that I should make sure I have the latest updates for the .NET Framework 2.0. After a little hunting on the MS site I see that there is a patch aptly named .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pac1. I download and install that too (2-3 mins on this one also.) Ok great my machine is now ready for the wonders of tabbed folders. Yeah!

I go back the URL provided by MaximumPC and download QT TabBar for Windows XP, create a new folder drop in the zip file and extract the many compressed files therein. I click on the .exe file, a window pops up and asks if I would like to Install or UN-install The QT TabBar. You know the one I click and after the very very quick install I was instructed to immediately log off my pc (not turn off) so I log out and in, causing windows to find the new TabBar application.Continue reading
